Freedom—July 25, 2022—Loons are an iconic species in New Hampshire, and a special attraction on Ossipee Lake, where their number has grown thanks to a network of volunteers who help protect them.

There’s much to learn and know about loons, and what better opportunity to do so than as part of Freedom Old Home Week, now celebrating its 123rd year.

On Tuesday, August 2, Freedom wildlife photographer and natural history educator Joe Callanan will present “Loons of Ossipee Lake,” a free one-hour family-oriented program about last year’s loon hatching on Berry Bay, the first there in 46 years.

Callanan and other volunteers monitored, observed and protected the adult pair and their chick throughout the summer, and documented the nesting, birth and parenting process in stunning photos.

The “Loons of Ossipee Lake” event will be in Freedom Town Hall at 6:30 p.m., and is sponsored by Ossipee Lake Alliance. Refreshments will be served.

Callanan has donated a 16″ x 20″ canvas photo print that will be raffled, and he will have photos and photo greeting cards available for purchase. All of the revenue from the raffle will go toward the purchase of the Anne Turner Packard conservation land in Square Brook on Berry Bay, with 20% of the revenue from the sale of other merchandise going to the same fund.
