Ossipee — August 3, 2007 — Barry Hill, an Ossipee business owner who spent much of his time researching and writing about local history, died on July 21 after a brief illness. He and his wife, Susan, have lived on Ossipee Lake since 1996.

A successful Massachusetts attorney who was active in land conservation issues, Hill retired to Ossipee and began a real estate title business while pursuing his interests in archeology and history. As president of Ossipee Historical Society, he wrote extensively for the group’s newsletter and gave numerous lectures and slide presentations. During the past few years he led the effort to save the Carroll County Courthouse and have ownership transferred to the Society.

In 2003, he and author Janice Petrie led Ossipee Lake Alliance’s first Tales of Ossipee Lake presentation, “The Ghost of Ossipee Lake,” and last year he launched a long-term project with the Alliance to document the history of the lake.

A memorial service was held in Massachusetts, and a local memorial service is planned for a future date, to be determined and announced. Hill’s family requests that donations in his memory be made to the Carroll County Courthouse Capital Campaign, P.O. Box 245, Ossipee, NH 0386.
