Freedom–May 12, 2015–Freedom’s Aquatic Invasive Species Committee will host an informative program featuring Amy Smagula, Limnologist and Exotic Species Program Coordinator for the N.H. Department of Environmental Services. The program will be on Saturday, May 30, from 1-3 p.m. in the Lakeside Room at Danforth Bay Camping Resort.

Attendees will hear about a number of programs that are in place to deal with aquatic invasive species (AIS) including:

• Weed Watchers: volunteers who are trained to identify and report AIS
• Lake Host Program: voluntary boat inspections and boater education on AIS
• The Long-Term Variable Milfoil Management Plan for the Danforth Pond system
• The work of the Freedom Aquatic Invasive Species Committee

Attendees will be instructed on how to recognize the AIS typically found in the Ossipee Lake system, which is infested with variable milfoil in a number of locations. In recent years, Weed Watchers and other local volunteers have been responsible for reporting new infestations, allowing removal of the weeds and preventing their further spread.
