Ossipee — January 30, 2008 — The Ossipee Conservation Commission has announced it is closing in on its fundraising goal for the “Window on the Ossipee Mountains” project and urged the public to help close the gap before the April 1 purchase deadline.

In an e-mail message to the Alliance, Commission Chair Elizabeth Gillette said the recent donation from local business Pike Industries has put the conservation group within $65,000 of the $250,000 purchase price of the property, which provides a unique ‘viewshed’ on Route 16 to countless visitors and residents.

More than 70% of the total has been raised in less than a year from individuals, businesses and grants, Gillette said, adding she is hopeful that the fact the group is so close to its goal will help spur the additional contributions that are needed.

Begun a year ago, “Window on the Ossipee Mountains” is a conservation project to protect the outstanding view of the Ossipee Mountains range from Route 16 as well as the surrounding land and water resources and important wildlife habitat.

When conserved, the 26.6 acre site will connect two previously protected sites for an extended green corridor along the busy State highway. Permanent public access will be enhanced by a scenic overlook with educational maps and signs describing the unique geologic history of the internationally-known Ossipee Mountains Ring Dike complex and nearby points of interest. A nature trail is also planned.

Last week the group announced a $5,000 donation from local business Pike Industries, Inc., which operates an asphalt plant on nearby Route 28 that began operations in 1872.
