Volunteers Are Sought for October Milfoil Clean Up

Freedom—September 22, 2015—Volunteers are needed to help keep milfoil fragments from spreading when an infestation of the invasive weed is removed from Berry Bay in October. As “tenders,” the volunteers will catch and remove milfoil fragments that are the inevitable result of hand-pulling the weeds from the lake by professional divers. Each fragment is capable of starting a new infestation if not removed from the water.

The location of the milfoil, in a cove across from Freedom Condominiums, makes it exceptionally important to harvest the fragments to prevent them from flowing past the dam and into the Ossipee River.

Effingham Conservation Commission initiated the clean up, which will take approximately four days, from October 5th to the 8th. Professional diver Cliff Cabral will lead the removal. Cabral has managed dozens of such efforts on Ossipee Lake.

The volunteer “tending” is being led by Berry Bay Association President Roberta MacCarthy, who is looking for 2-4 volunteers each day who can spend at least 2 hours on the task.

To volunteer, contact ramaccarthy@gmail.com and indicate which days you can be available. Residents from all parts of the lake are encouraged to help.
